Djembe Class

Weekly Classes

Generally a two hour class. We work on both djembe and dunun parts for a traditional tune. We discuss the musics place in Malinke culture as well as its more current uses.

In addition to the basic parts, a ensembel "break" and individual solos are covered. the class is fine tuned to the individuals in the class, and the goal is for everyone to be challenged to their own level.

School Residencies

Fully customizable residencies! We begin with a meeting to asses your needs, then we work together to design a residency spedific to your school's curriculm and core standards.

Durations can be anything from a one hour "drop in" to expose students to a music from a different culture to full school year long projects which might include peformances, lectures, regular classes and even student performances.

Seminar Classes

Longer and more intense than a weekly class, a seminar class is usually held on a weekend. These classes run from 2 to 6 hours.

A typical seminar class would cover at least one tradional Malinke rhythm and would include solos and ensembe "breaks". A lot of material is covered in these classes, at a much faster rate than in a weekly class. A recording device is strongly advised.

Facilitated Drum Circles

Community events designed to bring people together and to have a great time. Facilitaion involves helping the community of drummers to listen to each other as well as finding unique modes of expression

Someting about beginners to experienced players... need some wording here.

Djembe Gym

A one hour workout on the djembe or dununs. The class is split between the instruments and we work on technique building exorcises. Come ready to work as there are no rest times in this class. Class starts and ends promptly on the hour, so be come early and be prepared to leave late.

This class is not for learnign new tunes, it is for increasing your strength, stamina and sound on the djembe or dununs. The djembe exorcises are pulled from traditional techniques, and the dununs work on core part materials and enchaufmants.

It is strongly suggested that you bring a towel and plenty of water for this class.
